So wrong yet so right
Pushing the boundaries of political incorrectness further than "Borat" ever dared to go, "Bruno", the latest creation by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, is a laugh-until-it hurts kind of comedy - so incredibly offensive, yet absolutely brilliant.
Although the film has more stunts than it does plot, you won't notice anything but the sheer brilliance of Baron Cohen's ability to dupe the unsuspecting.
Following a stunt involving a velcro jumpsuit at the Agata Ruiz de la Prada fashion show in Milan, Bruno (Baron Cohen) loses his job from his Austrian television show, "Funkyzeit", and sets on a trip to the US to become "the most famous Austrian since Hitler".
With his hunger for fame, Bruno (in true Baron Cohen style) finds himself in some unimaginable situations: telling an evangelist gayness "converter" he has "blowjob lips"; presenting his adopted African baby "OJ" (who he received after trading in an iPod) to a talk-show audience full of African-Americans; and trying to bring peace to "Middle Earth" (i.e. the Middle East) by speaking with representatives from two rival groups who try and explain to Bruno the difference between Hamas and hummus.
Shot in mockumentary style, the film is inescapably hilarious and will have you both cringing at the reactions of the unsuspecting people falling victim to Bruno's stunts, and shocked by the controversy-laden comments he presents to confront and expose serious social issues such as homosexuality, racism and religion.
This film exists to shock and amuse and if you're offended by nudity, homosexuality, dildos or mock fellatio, then "Bruno" may not be the film for you. But if you're into the comedic style of Baron Cohen in the same vein as "Borat", then "Bruno" is the not-to-miss comedy of the year.

Absolutely Hilarious

This was fantastic. Other person reviewing said "so right and yet so wrong". I think those words sum it up exactly. It is ridiculously funny but so politically incorrect. Put aside all the politics and you will split your sides laughing.

what a waste of money

I would have been better off going to Macdonalds etc than wasting my money on this movie. There were only 8 other people in the theatre watching it, so how does it stay so high on the box office ratings ?

Awsome

I went and saw this movie with my 2 friends and i had to show my ID twice to just get in but it was worth every penny ! Other reviews say that it was disgusting and terrible and a waste of 80 minutes but to like this movie you have to have this kind of humour!!!! so if you hate vulgar movie and you hated borat then see Bruno well of course your going to hate it because Bruno is heaps worse then Borat, so go in with an open mind and enjoy it for what it is. i gave it 5 stars because it was absolutely hilarious and i would see it again.

dont marry sacha!

This movie was repulsive, to say the least. Having a giant penis revolving in front of your face seems absolutely horifying, yet in comparison to the trash throughout the rest of the movie it seems rather mild. This movie was rude and offensive, from mocking muslims, jews and the "middle earth" to telling people to shoot christians, there were little to no laughs here. I would not let my 15 year old sibling watch this! It should have a higher rating, it's only evidence that society has minimalised it's viewing standards and tollerance. such a disappointment, such an offence. I can't believe Isla Fischer would marry such a revolting man! :(

Throwaway laughs.

I feel like this movie stole 81 minutes of my life that I will never get back, not to mention $15.50 that I'm sure I could have put to much better use somehow. It reminded me of why it has been such a long time since I've been to the cinema to see a 'popular' film. I laughed a grand total of maybe 3 times over the course of the film, but that is not what really bothered me. A gay 'jew' running through the streets of Palestine; a flamboyantly homosexual Austrian being repeatedly whipped by an enormous-breasted platinum blonde at a Swingers party and a traditional deep-south redneck kissing a man on the set of a TV show hosted by 'Straight Dave' will obviosuly appeal to and amuse a huge number of people. Indeed, my four compartriots were falling about in their chairs laughing. Sense of humour is a very personal and individual trait and what one person finds hilarious may struggle to pull a laugh from someone else. This is why I'm not particularly concerned that I didn't find Bruno funny.
What does concern me is that this is one of those films that is supposed to have some deeper purpose - it is not simply a comedy but is almost, in some perverse way, touted as a documentary. It promises to expose the on-going marginilisation and suffering of homosexuals, to challenge deep-seated beliefs, to 'make you think.' But I would like to assert that it will do none of these things. There are two types of people who will watch this film: -people who are already well aware of the issues mentioned above and may be fighting for change (neatly summed up in the fact that my companions were four other lesbians) -those people that Bruno is trying to both criticise and change, the 'rednecks' who will be amused by the movie simply because they still think gays are funny in general, especially those who fulfill all the stereotypes as effectively as Bruno.
I'm confident that Sacha Baron Cohen did nothing to alter the opinions of the hunters 'Mike' and 'Donny,' nor the karate instructor he assaulted with a dildo nor the 'second stage gay converter.' He simply reinforced stereotypes in their minds and reminded the rest of us how much prejudice exists in the world while doing nothing to correct it. In a worl where gays are struggling for the rights to adopt children and marry, it is my personal opinion that Bruno is more of a hindrance to our cause than a help. If you are looking for a few throwaway laughs, and the idea of a celebrity swapping his i-pod for an African child he names OJ has got you giggling, then give Bruno a shot. But if you're looking for anything deeper, then don't waste your time or money.

"Borat almost comedy gold, this is not even close"

I had seen the sequences of Borat on the Ali G show and thought they had a humurous quality to it, but the Bruno sketches had nothing that made me even remotely laugh. That's the same with the films incarnations of these two characters. After enjoying Baron Cohen's Borat movie, I was quite interested in seeing if he could turn Bruno into a quality film, he fails, I believe that comedy is dying very quickly in movies, I can't remember the last time I saw a comedy that made me do what I was suppose to; Laugh. Make no mistake I liked Borat alot but even it didnt get it right completely. Bruno is very offensive, and it feels like this was the only idea the makers had to make this film. I never laughed once, and only the middle east stuff made me feel like I was close to breaking into a smile( notice this is'nt the rude stuff). I cancelled alot of things so that I could see this film and I am so dissapointed by this that Im not sure I will watch anything else by S.B.Cohen in the future until he starts to show some respect to the audience and more importantly respect to the genre of Comedy. Dancing & Talking genitalia, sexual encounters with the dead, bondage jokes, fights with sex toys, this stuff is not funny. the sequences with confrontations had the ability to get laughs, but with bad editing they fall flat. Im not a prude I like jokes of the sexual kind, but these are just plain stupid and wrong. The only reason Im giving this any rating at all is because it included a moment with Harrison Ford. Hopefully Bruno will take Mr Ford's advice and the quicker the better.

Hehe

Having to show my id twice with my friends just to get into the movie, I understood why once the movie began. with an entire 2 minutes to a dancing male genitals which me and my friends watched through our fingers giggling, I felt releaved that I hadn't taken up my dads offer of going with him. I did though see the hidden messages behind the movie, including a controversal scene of abortion in which the whole cinema cringed at. Not a movie for people who can't see the funny side of things, and perhaps no real religious people due to the little remark of a baby dressed as a nazi officer wheeling a dead Jew into an incinerator, thanks to my history lesson, I felt alittle 'ouch'. But love the part when he's interviewing the children models parents, these parents need to take a good look at themselves, certainly when one would go far enough to give her 30 pounds child liposuction.

Vulgar
Upon viewing this film, I was astonished that it got any good ratings at all from the media. This movie was discusting, vulgar, embarrassing and incredibly stupid. Sure there were parts that were funny but most of these funny parts were already shown time and time again in the previews of the movie. To think that the media would give this a good rating is an embarrasing example of our poor discusting society and its lack of good taste in movies.

Bruno is a bomb of a movie
Strongly suggest one does not waste money on this total drivel.
I was swayed by the positive reviews I had read and now am annoyed I believed them! It is a lesson learnt not to take such notice.
I thought the shorts of Bruno gave a really funny idea I thought of what the movie would be about. That wasnt the case at all and in fact some of the outfits e.g the hilarious bull outfit for Spain did not even feature.
I kept wondering where the movie was going as I watched it and was never enthralled wiht it. I laughed only a few times which was all up disppointing.
It also was a relatively short movie and I was left feeling ripped off totally.

bruno review

Is it a case of the emporers gold clothes because this movie is distinctly unfunny. Yet all media is falling over themselves in saying its brilliant. His minders must have paid a lot of money to get such unanimous outrage and hilarity from the media spin merchants. Has anyone seen the doco about the gypsy township exploited in their peasantry by Borat. Hmmm I wonder if these people are paid for their naivety.
