The Final Destination: Death Trip
|
On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave... escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality.

Wow. What complete and utter crap. Never has a movie so blatantly disregarded story, acting and dialogue in favour of some good old fashioned violence. David R. Ellis should not be called the director, but instead the perpetrator. He inflicts so much pain on the audience by way of atrocious filmmaking that you could be forgiven in thinking he was Death himself. Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, it does... a lot worse. You can thank the dialogue for this – “Your life is in danger and I think you’re going to die” for example - it is mercilessly appalling from start to finish. Cue: snicker from crowd.
The ludicrously elaborate deaths - of which the Destination franchise is known for - offer a small amount of fun, though where the first movie had the shock factor to its unpredictable gore, here it is just laughable. We go from fairly silly ‘rock-in-lawnmower’ and ‘crushed-by-bath’ set-ups to amazingly ridiculous ‘death-by-carwash’ and ‘diced-by-sharp-fence’ sequences, but you have to see it to believe it. The one saving grace is that the characters are so incredibly dumb it is pleasing to see them get what they deserve, does it really take brain surgeon to check both ways before crossing a road? Cue: snicker from crowd.
Surely the joy of seeing this in 3D offers something positive? Wrong. Although having objects fly straight at you is always slightly appealing - even if done weakly - this thrill can only last a handful of times before becoming tiresome and repetitive. In addition, the cheap effects are often blurry and dark; any fast movements across the screen had the 3D effect trying to catch up. A handful of times I had to take my glasses off to give my eyes a rest for a few seconds, something not necessary if the 3D is used properly.
Save your money and avoid this at the cinema and on DVD. In fact, if someone lends you this on DVD snap it in half and return it to them with a smile knowing you have just done them a favour.
