    Wow.

"Avatar" is masterpiece of cinema, and one that must be seen on the big screen. No DVD, Blu-ray or illegal download can live up to the immersive, wondrous experience you'll get in theatres.

This is one of those rare, game-changing movies which makes you believe not everyone in Hollywood is a cynical hack. Remember the feeling you got when you first saw "Jurassic Park", or "The Fellowship of the Ring", or "The Matrix"? "Avatar" is like that — only on a more immense scale.

That's mostly due to the amazing, much-talked-about special effects. The faraway world of Pandora has been created in a computer, but it's a lush, neon, glowing paradise crawling with fantastic flora and fauna. By the end of the film, you'll wish you could book a one-way ticket there.

The Na'vi are an even more impressive achievement: they're the tall, blue, cat-alien humanoids who inhabit Pandora. Paraplegic Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) becomes one of them when his consciousness is uploaded to an artificially created Na'vi body — an "avatar".

The villainous Col. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) sends Jake out into Pandora's toxic (to humans) atmosphere, to find ways to bring down the Na'vi so mankind can get at the precious metals buried under their village. While exploring this deadly but beautiful world, Jake encounters Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a Na'vi princess who shepherds him into her society.

There's no "uncanny valley" here. The Na'vi are stunningly rendered; their faces, particularly their huge golden eyes, are so expressive it's sometimes hard to believe they aren't real.

It runs for almost three hours but never feels that long. Even those who aren't fans of sci-fi will be drawn into the plot's action and romance, and some of the film's set pieces are stunningly emotional.

But "Avatar" isn't perfect: the plot is sometimes too black-and-white, there's some cheesy moments (what do you expect from director James Cameron, the man who coined "I'm king of the world"?), and there's occasionally a weird racial subtext that might put off the PC brigade. But the film is so engrossing that its flaws are overwhelmed by what makes it great.

And there's a lot of greatness here. "Avatar" is a film like no other.

Man, I went into this movie expecting to be blown away, but unfortunatley i was put to sleep. I left with an hour to go, i just had better things to do. I mean "ooo wow, the plant spirals down, and it glows" big deal. And the animals were boring. I look at it this way, who would of thought of a kangaroo or a elephant if they were never around? His animals could have been designed by a primary schooler. And its a dances with wolves rip off. It didnt make sense, why would they invest all the time and money into convincing the blue people to move and then just say, "stuff it,blow em up" or the big tree anyway. He dosent deserve what hes got out of it, james cameron i mean. And ive read a similar plot about the trees talking to each other in a book.

This is a thinking persons movie and not for naysayers or people with no imagination. We have just watched it for the second time and it was as brilliant and moving as the first time. If you want to journey to another world even if it's a fantasy world (And here is where you need to have some imagination!) then go see this movie!

Visually outstanding movie.. like being immersed in a completely new world.. definitely a must-see. The story-line was at times simplistic in the way it dealt with some serious issues regarding cultural imperialism, race and environmentalism, but it was a fun movie to watch and consistent with what we have come to expect from James Cameron. Definitely a movie many people will enjoy.

    Incredible Fantasy
    4.5 star rating
This movie is worth all the hype for the experience it takes the viewer on as well as the powerful story and morals behind it. The special effects are mindblowing as summed up by most reviews. The only criticism I can think of was the slighlty exaggerated rhetoric. Towards the end, the human species is demonised to a slighlty unreasonable degree which made an otherwise wonderful story unbelieveable. Had the "bad guys" been more rounded characters (and ironically, more human) perhaps I would have not have been woken from the incredible fantasy. But I left with the distinct feeling that this was, truly, the movie of our time.

    2.5 star rating
Meh...as with every film that is hyped out of all reality i was disappointed with this. It was all quantity of special effects - no quality of plot. It just looked like any other cartoon to me. And the fluoro/coloured vegetation in the forest just made it look even 'faker'.Somehow the plot itself and the 'real' scenes of the humans seemed rushed (to make room for more oohs and aahs with special effects) yet the movie went about an hour too long. Whoever the publicity people are for this movie they've done their job well - unfortunatley for the viewing public, the hype well exceeds the performance.

    Great and Not So Great
    3.5 star rating
James Cameron's latest film, Avatar, lives up to many expectations as a great film, but does lose its impact as it goes on. There is a brilliant "larger than life" world created that does immerse you into the story. As far as the plot goes, it flows well and even though it is predictable, doesn't leave you feeling short-changed in that department.

The movie is well worth seeing, and is backed by some astounding visual and sound effects that are made for the big screen. I would definitely recommend it.

On the downside, I thought that the ratio of CGI:real-life tended to be a little out of balance, and it did begin to wear on towards the end of the film. The overall story of "natives vs the corporation" did not quite justify the attempted scope of the movie.

The positives do outweigh any negatives though, and I suggest if you haven't already seen it, to get down there and get tickets.

Boring drivel fit for simple minded people
I didn't expect much from this director. But I figured that I would close off the holiday season by attending this movie and splurging for the 3D showing.

I was right not to expect much. This is the usual good vs. evil confrontation this time pitting the indigenous tribes of the Amazon, I presume, against the evil agents of modernity who are determined to destroy the pristine forests abounding with legends, folklore and ancient drivel.

I expect that a great many people will find this movie enjoyable. I found it utterly boring. I couldn't stop yawning throughout the movie.

The special effects were none too inspiring other than to say that if you spend millions you can get some pretty good computer graphics.

For my time & money movie going is all about a good story with interesting character, gripping narrative and good direction.

I think that after watching apocalyptic nonsense such as War of the Worlds and others I have grown accustomed to the fact that these movies leave you feeling empty after you walk thinking to yourself what did I just see.

This is a good movie for simple minded people who enjoy a good vs. evil fight along simple lines with basic story telling.

If you are not that, go see something else. Or better yet go read a good book.

This was a film that I was not going to see, being sci-fi, until post-Christmas boredom set in. Yet I loved every part of it. There are those who can stand back and sneer over this or that, but I never once saw this or that, not was there to ever look for it. I adored the Pandora crowd scenes willing creatures back to loife, loved the plant and animal life and panorama on Pandora, loved the Pandoreans. Just sit back and drink it all in. It's brilliant.

As a fan of sci-fi/action films as well as fan of James Camerons movies, I was very excited to see this film. The strength of this film is without adoubt the special effects and the 3D. The planet of Pandora looks awesome. The dissapointing thing with this movie is that the story and the movie didn't really offer anything new. Once I got passed the 3D and the special effects it all felt like something I had seen before from other movies. This is still a great movie to see at the cinemas but don't exepct to see something you haven't seen before.

What a brilliant movie one that needs to be seen on the big screen or in 3D. It was amazing to see the imagination and graphics of this movie and the storyline of good verses evil shone. As well as the environmental issue of the spirit of the land and how we are connected to it and need to care for it was evident. I just loved this movie and feel the money spent on it was worth it.

Was aware of the EPIC build up to this film, so went with an open mind. It was spellbinding. The CGI was seamless and very realistic. Quite violent so maybe not a kids movie. It had everything and made you proud to be a Na'vi and cringe to be a Human. Nothing I can compare it to, that I can think of. Sam Wothington did us proud and I am sure he will go on to bigger and better things. 9/10

    Very disappointing.

I had been looking forward to this movie for months.

This movie reminded me of a violent video game full of guns, and fighting scenes with little depth and a confusing story line.

I cannot understand what the hype was about.

The best thing about the movie was the animation but after 3x hours even that lost it's appeal.

I think a movie like this would best suit a 16 year old boy.

I agree with absolutely everything Samuel << has said. The movies special effects are out of this world, you completely forget you watching animated “blue aliens” (The Na’Vi) because they look so real! The story line is great, you really do fall in love with the Na'vi people and their entire world. I would trade my life here on earth for a life as a native to Pandora!

Fantastic, it’s a must see! 3D would be even better.

All of the peices fit together to form a perfect story; perfectly acted out. Even if you hate all of the story elements above, the story and the acting is nothing compared to the effects!

    5 star rating
Saw this in 3D and there's no doubt the FX are utterly stunning. I got the same feeling watching this movie as when I watched Star Wars for the first time back in the 70s - blown away. It is hard not to believe Pandora really exists - and what a magnificent place it is. The editing of this movie has been very carefully executed and at no time do you wonder what's going on - that, "Did I miss something?" feeling which so often happens and can be so frustrating. The plot is not unlike Star Wars and may be a little thin at times, the bad guy general is a lot more comic-like than the animated creatures and the corporate weasel never quite seems the right fit for his role, but I loved Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington and just the whole "prettiness" of this film is breathtaking. I never thought I'd go much on big blue guys, but now I'm not so sure it's out of the question....

Brilliant Effects - Story not as good
    3.5 star rating
From the visual effects/3d wizardry/spectacular it was a very beautiful film to watch and its a magnificent achievement. What lets it down is the story. The story should have had a bit more depth. The environmental/indigenous story was very superficial. Anyone who has seen the progress our own fossil fuel industry in this country will see how the companies divide and conquer indigenous families by buying them off, or forcing them to destroy their own sacred areas for employment. So its not a clear cut goodies and baddies scenario as it is portrayed in this film. I expected a Pixar quality story to such an enormously hyped film.

    An escapist's delight
    4.5 star rating
As the 1988 blockbuster, animated film, Akira was a landmark film, without question – so to will Avatar be a marvel of modern photo-realistic computer-generated animation technology. Avatar is a stunning visual experience and draws you into a complex science fiction alien world with intricate landscapes and characters.

The movie entices its viewers think about ‘spirituality’ and it comes to no surprise that the meaning of Avatar (or ‘Avatara’) in Hinduism, means ‘descending from heaven to earth’, or to ‘cross over’. This movie is brilliantly fraught with analogies to our modern world, compelling its viewers to question, though rather indirectly, current issues such as the ‘War on Terror’, ‘America’s involvement in the war in Iraq’, ‘The effects of the war on Iraq’s Indigenous Peoples, such as the Chaldeans, Assyrians, Syriacs’, and ‘Ethical issues of privatising the military’.

With a running time of over two and half hours, Avatar is a great movie to seek escapism. It is a breath of fresh air to finally see something worth watching. James Cameron, has far excelled himself as one of the greatest directors, he could have quite easily basked in the success of his 1997 movie ‘Titanic’ and still been held in high esteem.

What more can be said – it is a must see movie!!!

Revolutionary 3D technology, bad luck about the storytelling
    2.5 star rating
The 3D technology has reached a higher level of visual participation for the audience. The depth within the frame has become vertigo inducing. It is a virtual-reality experience. With Cameron's new 3D cameras audience will demand every big-budget Hollywood blockbuster be made with this higher evolution of cinema-going participation. The only problem with AVATAR is not it's revolutionary technology but the awfully familiar story that we've seen so many times before. The indigenous alien race on this organic garden of eden planet is so bland and cliched that the teenagers sitting next to me were paying more attention to their messages on their mobiles instead of watching the film. AVATAR is a huge improvement on George Lucas's last three STAR WARS films but not as cutting edge as the state-of-the-art technology when it comes to groundbreaking story-telling. For superior story's one has to wait for Christopher Nolan's very complex INCEPTION next year July. Still for the complex visual spectacle of AVATAR one has to watch this movie in a 3D cinema as opposed to the 2D cinema. When MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE 4 comes out in 2011 it will hopefully be in 3D. Audience will demand nothing less with a new era in filmmaking.

Avatar has got to be the movie of the year! Sam Worthington was ideal for the role and played it perfectly. I have seen it twice already and i plan to see it more.

Yes its long, but once you see the relationships grow time becomes a blur and you are so involved in the film it feels like you are in it your self. I can't say much as it will give it away. All I can say is that if there is a movie to smash New Moon and Twilight it will be this.

GO SEE IT!!! You will kick your self if you don't. As the MovieFix guy says no pirated copy or downloaded version will ever come close to the cinema!.
