A franchise is salvaged
Lovers of this killer-robot franchise will be relieved to learn that "Terminator Salvation" is better than 2003's "Rise of the Machines", the messy third instalment in the series. On the downside, it doesn't come close to the standard set by parts one and two, "Terminator" (1984) and "Judgment Day" (1991).
A high point of "Salvation" is Australian actor Sam Worthington, who's grimly likeable as Marcus Wright. He's a death-row prisoner who's executed in 2003... only to wake up alive and well in 2018, where he discovers that human civilisation has been all but wiped out by Skynet's ruthless robots.
Something has been done to Marcus - you'll already know what if you've seen the film's trailer - though before he finds out what it is, he joins up with survivor Kyle Reese ("Star Trek's" Anton Yelchin) to fight with the Resistance, a rag-tag army of humans who look up to John Connor (Christian Bale, who spends the entire movie doing his most gravelly Batman voice).
Fans of explosions and computer graphics are in for a treat: the special effects in "Salvation" are top-notch, particularly scenes depicting the rubble-strewn, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, and director McG has crafted some gripping action sequences.
But "Salvation" will be a disappointment for those who appreciated the cerebral tone of the first two "Terminator" films, which perfectly blended thrills and thoughtfulness. There's only a few token references to the "fate vs. free will" theme that dominated instalments one and two, and they're shoehorned awkwardly into the choppy script.
Worse, "Salvation" has so many plot holes that by the end it becomes almost impossible to suspend disbelief. Where does the Resistance get all their fancy fighter jets? How come Skynet, a supposedly super-intelligent computer system, is too dumb to locate and destroy its enemies? And why do the evil robots' headquarters appear to have been designed for humans to use?
Nevertheless, "Salvation" is a good ride if you can buy into its premise... and an unexpected cameo from a familiar face makes it worth the price of admission.

What you say
there is No Fate but what we make.
I have to say that terminator salvation was well done. It's not a james Cameron film it has heaps of holes that terminator fans will pull apart, i did. Like the machines they couldn't hit the side of a barn at 10 meters.
All negatives aside I saw terminator when i was 11 and I loved the movie and have followed this roller coaster ever since. Christian Bale was awesome he has nailed this character. Sam Worthington some say stole Bales thunder, hmmm we all know Connor's his reasons for being there his story, but Marcus needed to explain more of who he is and why he's there and his connection to the main story plot. He teaches Kyle a few tricks and short cuts along the way. Maybe they'll make a sequel.. who am i fooling they will it will need to be a good script other wise they will lose their leading actors. I recommend seeing the first film again just to get your tech-coms knowledge up to speed..

New Terminator

I thought the film was excellent... The comments I have read to the contrary, are nothing more than people trying to bring facts into what is clearly fiction..... The film perfectly delves into a possible future, which was brought to life from the original film. The story line was sound, the performances outstanding and special effects second to none....
I read a statement that the film was in error that the writers incorrect in the internal view of the skynet base, in such a destroyed and desolate world. But I see machines to accurate, sterile and so advanced technologically advance it would have been stupid, for the writer to make the base a complete factory or to the like of. Perhaps the problem was the human sized corridors... Look at the T-600 a human size drone and which was the bulk of the Skynet army, who’s not to say that all drones a programmable and there wasn't active intelligent working and creative cyborgs....
The film falls in line with the first film and was above my expectations, even the CGI use of Arnolds face was important and acceptable. The T-800 was relentless tough and formidable which also kept in touch with the original, as well as exciting.

Awesomeeeee

I loved it. There was a surprise guest who just completed it (eventhough it wasnt the real him) I cant say anymore cause I dont want to wreck it . I thought the Aussie Sam Worthington was excellent. He'll definately win an award for supporting actor....He completely took over the movie and made a strong presence.

This movie needs to be terminated!

The appeal of this movie for most terminator fans is going to be fairly limited considering that Arnold Shwartznegger isn't in it. Still I watched this movie with a fairly open mind. With basically no story line the action scenes really needed to deliver but failed to do so. There wasn't any character that you wanted to connect to due to the very average acting, and no comic relief that Arnie provided so well. Essentially it's a movie that has taken away from the other films and shouldn't have been made in my opinion.

Terminator Salvation is great! The effects and the sound were just superb compared to the other three. The only downside to it were the unexplained parts of the movie, such as where did the humans get all those fighter jets from and why were the robots too dumb to detect where the resistance was. Overall excellent movie, I highly recommend this film for people who like action and adventure.
By the way, the surprise cameo is very SURPRISING!!!

Senseless Humourless Violent Mess

This film bears no resemblance to the 3 previous Terminator movies. The previous one were a mix of sci-fi and humour with some interesting underlying messages about the human race.
None of that is present here. This is an orgy of senseless violence devoid of humour and substance. No underlying tones at all. Just implausible violence in an ugly and dark film which makes no sense and shouldn't have been made.
Don't take your kids either. They will get scared. This film does not have a single redeeming feature and its producers, having spent a huge amount of money in delivering this ugly film, deserve the worst possible negative return on their 'investment'. Contribute to that but staying away from this movie.

Great Effort!

I went and saw Terminator Salvation yesterday, and I was happy to say that it was an adrenalin pumped action ride from start to end. The new director to the franchise, McG did a great job on the baron, post-apocalyptic L.A. It really had a overpowering sense of death lingering in the skeletal buildings, burnt out cars and the occasional skull floating around. Of course, there were not quite as many skulls on the ground as was depicted in the previous terminators.
Christian Bale did a great job on playing John Connor and the Aussie Sam Worthington really shone.
Over all, the new director did a decent job with the making of this movie. The action sequences were greatly crafted (especially the aerial battles) and the special effects where top-notch. But the overall feeling of the movie was not what I had hoped for. Now unfortunatley, I can not quite put my finger on what I didn't like about the vibe of this movie. But I will tell you some other things which I did not especially like...
The action sequences did not feel VERY exciting to watch. They did not give you the kick that the motorbike chase or the helicopter/SWAT car chase did from Terminator 2. They just didn't feel Terminatorish. The main thing I didn't really like about this movie is that the fight sequences between man and terminators were not as epic as I hoped they would be. I was hoping for some scenes where 100's of Terminators has firefights with 100's of humans. And a few scenes of a Jeep/helicopter gunner gunning down waves of terminators would have been great. BUT in the W-H-O-L-E movie only something like 5 Terminators get killed. (Excluding the ones that die in a massive explosion)
Over all, I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves action movies. Just don't go in expecting anything near as great as T1 or T2. But dont get me wrong. It is better than the goofy T3.
And also, there is a rumor going around about Arnold having a cameo in the movie. Let me tell you... You wont be disappointed.
Ps. To the critic on my left, the reason why the Machine base looks like it was built for humans, is because it was a human building before Judgment day. The thing that confuses me though, is why the machine bikes can be ridden by people. Why would they have been built with human controls on them?

"I'll be back" to see this again.

Terminator Salvation is a good movie. It will not be remembered like T2 but still delivers. As a fan of the other movies I believe McG has done a good job telling the story of the ressistance. The important characters are there, plenty of action and special effects.

YeeHaa
This movie is great. Action full stop from start to finish. Anyone who is into Doomsday scenario's etc. will really enjoy this movie when man and machine can't really tell the difference etween each other. It's almost like the old books of Cyborg which lead into the 6 million dollar man if we believe this is the future it will become it....
Great movie

Not a Bad Instalment

Worthington is indeed the star of this film and they may have done better to kill of Bale's character and leave the fight to Worthington's interesting invention. The action is well done and lifts it about T3, but the plot lets it down and character development is non-existent. It can't approach the first two movies for engagement. That's how this movie feels, lots of eye candy but little to make you feel for the characters or indeed the fate of humanity. Bonus points for the look of the post judgement day world, fans of the Fallout 3 game will love it. I enjoyed it, but won't see it again on the big screen. Hopefully before the next on McG sits down and watches T2 a few times to get a feel for what we are looking for in his movies.

Crap
I saw this last night and it is complete crap, 1, 2 and 3 are so much better, the only good thing about this complete mess is Sam Worthington. Christian bale needs to drop the weird serial killer voice, he is so over rated. Bring on Transformers to kick terminators butt at the box office.
