Top London cop, Police Constable Nicholas Angel, finds himself reassigned to the sleepy West Country village of Sandford. With garden fetes and neighbourhood watch meetings replacing the action of the city, Angel struggles to adapt to his situation and finds himself partnered with Danny Butterman, an oafish but well meaning young Constable. Just as all seems lost, a series of grisly accidents motivates Angel into action. Convinced of foul play, Angel realises that Sandford may not be as idyllic as it seems.

    Arresting black comedy

Tired of impossibly quaint English murder-mysteries? Weary of over-the-top action flicks? Then check out "Hot Fuzz", a laugh-out-loud riot of a film that mashes up the two genres into one of the sharpest comedies in years.

"Hot Fuzz" comes from the same twisted minds who brought you the zom-rom-com "Shaun of the Dead" - Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright - and shares that flick's hyperactive, hilarious and wicked worldview.

Pegg is Nicholas Angel, a by-the-book London cop who's so good at his job that he's transferred because he makes the rest of the force look bad.

Angel winds up in Sandford, a picture-perfect country village torn from the pages of an Agatha Christie novel. Angel isn't pleased when he's partnered with Danny (Frost), the beer-swilling son of local police chief Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent), and given trivial duties like chasing escaped swans.

When a series of gruesome accidents starts befalling the citizens of Sandford, Angel is convinced that something sinister is afoot. Is there a murderer in the tranquil village, or is Angel just losing his marbles?

"Hot Fuzz" builds up to a conclusion that is so ridiculously, eye-poppingly enjoyable that it'll leave you with a buzz for days.

Pegg and Wright's razor-sharp screenplay is crammed with gags and the direction is smooth and inventive, though the film's real drawcard is Pegg and Frost's chemistry. The pair has worked together for years - in productions including the cult TV series "Spaced" - and their real-life friendship shines through the screen.

The same hyper-violence that turned stomachs during "Shaun of the Dead" is back in "Hot Fuzz" - if you're not comfortable with exploding heads and spouting blood, steer clear. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy this arresting black comedy.

While Shaun of the Dead looked like the work of people with too much time on their hands, Hot Fuzz is the work of two successful new stars with too much money at their fingertips. It is at least half an hour too long, testing the limits of hyperbole with escalating action sequences that strain the satire to make it self-parody. Before Hot Fuzz starts to fizz, however, it manages to be one of the most entertaining and cleverly made comedies in years.

Shaun of the Dead was an unexpected minor masterpiece. It became an instant cult smash and a critical sensation, lampooning the zombie genre. It teamed Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, a loveable duo of fat and thin, the most effective comedy duo since Abbott and Costello. They have terrific chemistry and while here Pegg stretches himself to play against type, Frost expertly recreates his loveable character from the first film.

Hot Fuzz follows an over-achieving young officer whose superb policing skills put the London force to shame. So much so that he gets shafted and sent to a seemingly sleepy village with a similarly sedated police force. More concerned with scoffing cake than solving crime, they fail to notice that a serial murderer is working amongst them.

Hot Fuzz is littered with incredible cameos from Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Edward Woodward and Timothy Dalton and it's an absolute joy to watch them revel in their best roles in years. But it's the two stars that carry the film and make Hot Fuzz fantastic entertainment.

What makes Hot Fuzz turn up the temperature is inspired direction from Edgar Wright — the editing is this movie's sharpest tool and the pace is cracking. With so many inbuilt jokes about the physicality and temperament of the stars, the ludicrous look of placing Hollywood-style action in English settings and the many barbs at British eccentricity, not to mention the rich reserve of movie satire they draw on whenever the story slumps, the film is a ready-made cult classic.

Watched this movie last night, I didn't want to but I am glad I did as it is one of the best movies I have seen in ages. Lots of great one-liners, brilliant casting - a very fun movie.

British, not American - trust me
    3.5 star rating
The very reason this film will hit its target with some is because of its British humour. Ken (Bunbury, WA) who says that this film has a 'really American flavour to the humour', is way off the mark. In fact, if anything, "Hot Fuzz" goes out of its way to mock the Americanisation of cop films. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, and for what it's worth, I didn't find it as hysterical as some, but it's about as American as Osama bin Laden.

Everything is not as it seems in the quiet English country side. A highly enjoyable film that everyone should see. A bit slow to get into it, but great nonetheless. Not as funny as "Shaun of the Dead" but still stands on its own.

    Funny all the way through

I really enjoyed this movie and agreed with the views of many reviewers about the endless amount of gags that left me laughing hysterically. I found it enjoyable from start to finish and didn't even notice the so called gory bits. I loved the performance of the actors in "Hot Fuzz" who also do a great job on their TV series "Spaced".

    Passes the time
    2.5 star rating
Get past the slathering, adulatory rants by the fanboys and girls and you'll find a film that passes the time adequately enough - mains problems are length and the directing style of Edgar Wright - yes, jump cuts, crash zooms and whip pans are lovely, but he's overegged the pudding on this one, or pehaps showed his limitations?

Good but not worth five stars

I enjoyed the movie and the humour in it. Being a creative person myself, it appealed to me to do something different to the 'norm' BUT it wasn't as good as the trailers talked it up to be.

    Funnier than 'Kenny'
    4.5 star rating
One of the funniest movies I have seen in years and clever to boot. Thoroughly entertaining. Funnier than "Kenny" and way funnier than "Shaun of the Dead" (which I thought was a bit lame).

    More than just funny
    4.5 star rating
Forget the funny bits, after all you see most of them in the trailer. What makes this film stand out is the brilliant editing and sound effects. It's a visual feast as you watch the mundane parts of Nicholas Angel's day whizz before your eyes like they have fast forwarded the film so you can enjoy the clever stunts and general craziness of "Crocket and Tubbie" as they chase down a swan and a grim reaper.

This film is overflowing with British acting talent, from Jim Broadbent to Steve Coogan, the amount of familar faces is endless. Even our own Cate Blanchett gets to join in the fun. It's clear all the actors are having a great time and you will too.

This is the best new film I've seen in 2007. There was so much to keep me entertained. The comedy, the action, the awesome soundtrack. It had everything I look for in a movie. Back of the net!

    So disappointing
    1 star rating
Don't bother. What a disappointing film after "Shaun of the Dead". It is very unfunny with a really American flavour to the humour, which is very heavy-handed with a coating of unnecessary sentimentality in the relationship of the Sargeant to his fat Constable. The only real laughs in the theatre were from a group of 18-year-old yobbos.

    Really silly
    0.5 star rating
So is this what we have to look forward to from the British film industry? Could this be the new wave? I would have been bored except for the base soundtrack wake up calls. I smiled a few times, but no genuine laugh out loud moments. No one else in the theatre laughed. It's just really silly stuff.

    Stop reading this right now
Do yourself a favour. Stop reading this right now, and go out the door and straight to your nearest Cinema. This is hands down one of the top 5 movies this year. Fantastic cast and storyline from one of Britain's most talented comedy writers. If you liked this movie, try and find yourself a copy of Simon Pegg's comedy series 'Spaced'. It only went for 2 seasons in the UK and was a cult classic.

    Midsomer Murders meets Rambo
"Midsomer Murders" meets "Rambo". The best action-packed movie and funniest comedy I have seen for years. If this movie doesn't attract an Oscar in every category, there is something wrong.

Simon Pegg becomes increasingly attractive as the plot unfolds. Excellent casting - Bill Nighy is a star as usual. A must see.

    Slow and boring
    0.5 star rating
"Hot Fuzz" is meant to be a comedy, so I waited for the humour but never came! A slow and very average story line with no real point to the movie. If you are into British films, you may enjoy it but I can't comprehend how this movie has been given 5 stars.

    I'm hot for the Fuzz
    5 star rating
I was at the Melbourne launch of "Hot Fuzz", and it was a huge hit with the crowd. There are consistent laughs throughout the film with lots of in-jokes, references and cameos, and some thumping action sequences. Yes, there's some gore as well, but it's done in a very humourous way as it was in "Shaun of the Dead". There are also a couple of dramatic and touching moments to balance it all out. I absolutely loved the movie, and I was lucky enough to meet Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright afterwards. They're incredibly lovely guys who deserve all the success that this movie will receive. Go and see "Hot Fuzz"; it rocks!!

One of the best films I have seen in a long time and I watch a lot. Just sheer class with the characters and one-liners, especially the in-jokes about so many other films. One for all ages, to be enjoyed any time of the day. Roll on "Hot Fuzz 2"!

    Bloody brilliant
    5 star rating
I have been waiting for this film to come out for over a year and was not disappointed. It was 'bloody brilliant.' Pegg as the straight man was an enjoyable revelation and Nick Frost along with a fantastic cast kept the comedy flowing. The sharp and fast editing style that Wright and Pegg are known for continues to amaze and add so much to the film. The blood, the gore, the growingly absurd ending was fantastic to watch and I can't wait to see the whole thing again.
