Disappointed with the latest "X-Men"? Bored by "The Da Vinci Code"? Never fear, Jack Sparrow is here!

Blockbuster season finally hits a pot of gold with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", the highly anticipated sequel to 2003's swashbuckling adventure "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl". Big action scenes, creative special effects and a huge dollop of comedy come together for a follow-up that's even better than the original.

And then there's Johnny Depp, character actor extraordinaire, who reprises his Oscar nominated role as quirky pirate Captain Jack Sparrow.

On their wedding day, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are arrested for aiding Jack, who remains at the top of the authorities' most-wanted list. The sentence is death, unless Will agrees to find the pirate outlaw and bring him home.

Will's journey thrusts him into another tangled web of supernatural intrigue. While the curse of the Black Pearl has been lifted, the legendary Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) - the Ruler of the Ocean Depths - is on the hunt for Jack, who owes the tentacled monster a blood debt.

The only way to escape Davy Jones's grasp is to retrieve the fabled Dead Man's Chest, which has the power to destroy every last spirit of the sea forever.

Directed by Gore Verbinski, "Dead Man's Chest" is expertly staged, from period costumes to eye-popping stunts. The best sequence takes place on a primitive island reminiscent of Peter Jackson's "King Kong", where Jack must escape the clutches of the tribesmen who plan to cook him for dinner. Other highlights include a deadly confrontation with a giant octopus, numerous sea battles and a traditional swordfight on a white sandy beach.

The key to this franchise's success is that it doesn't take itself seriously. Depp's performance is brilliantly eccentric; you almost expect him to stare down the lens of the camera and wink at the audience. The screenplay is full of wisecracks and colourful characters, complimented by Hans Zimmer's energetic score.

"Dead Man's Chest" feels like a direct continuation of the story rather than a stand-alone sequel. Even the ending, which features a terrific twist, serves as a cliffhanger for the third instalment.

Thankfully, audiences only have to wait until May 2007 to see "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End".

    Drooling over Johnny

This was an awesome movie... even though I was drooling over Johnny and Orlando the whole time, I thought the movie was excellent. Oh and what a hottie Davey Jones was (or not lol). Pretty action-packed and the humour was good. If you haven't seen it, DO IT coz you don't know what you're missing out on... I'm definitely buying the DVD!

What the heck is wrong with people?

This movie DOES have a good storyline and it's full of action, good acting and humour; it's so funny.

Most importantly, I am sick of seeing people compare it to the first movie, why can't you see it as its own movie?

Sure it continues sort of upon the story of the first movie but it's not the same movie, it's a new and a different one.

Those actors have worked their butts off to make a movie and do their best, and they did as their performance rocks, and all some of you can do is put the movie down. Anyone has a right to their own opinion, sure, but it's just plain b*ll to say it's a bad movie!

Loved the first PotC movie? You'll be bored spitless by the second.

This movie was *so* much in need of workshopping before it was filmed. As it stands, the script they went with is flat and artless, with little shape to it and none of the wit that kept the first one's tongue so firmly in its cheek and the glint in the audience's collective eye.

The production design is exemplary and the cinematography everything one could hope for, but it's confounding that the movie could be so patently overlong and yet still provide no character development to speak of and nary a moment for the extraordinary cast to shine. (Every one of them, and particularly Jack Davenport and Jonathan Pryce, was simply wasted.) The characters were lost in plot exposition, and the plot itself was lost in drab and flaccid dialogue.

A classic case of a sequel trying to do everything the first movie did, but just more of it, and ending up as a dreary mess. What a pity.

    The worst film ever made?
    0.5 star rating
The only film I have ever walked out of. I cannot think of a single redeeming feature. Even Johnny Depp hamming it up as Keith Richards with a sword could not save this turkey. Incredibly lame "jokes" and a plot lacking any discernible direction, I really felt sorry for the actors taking part in this big waste of money. Shame as I thought the first one was fun.

    It was great!
The night we went to watch the movie, my stomach was overflowing with butterflies. Before the movie had come out, I'd watched the trailer over and over, aching for it to come out. Finally, it did. We were late, and I ran out of the car as soon as we parked. My sister and I missed the wedding beginning, but still, we figured out what happened.

I personally think this movie was better than the first. It moved more quickly and, though it could be a bit confusing, it was great! It also seemed much shorter then 2 1/2 hours and the cast was brilliant. Can't wait for the 3rd one!!!! If you haven't watched it, you have to. Movies like these are a must-see in theaters.

    All over the shop
What a disappointment - a seriously flawed film. Plot was all over the shop, humour was over most people's heads, visual jokes repeated for no reason and way too long.

All the money in the world thrown at it and no-one with any vision to see its faults from the studios.

    Save your money and time.

This film was awesome!! It was entertaing and kept you on the edge of your seat. The only lapse in this film is the ending but it was still great. Make sure if you still have to view the movie you wait untill the very end of the credits (which is about 5 mins) because there is a little snippet of the movie so don't be too impatient because you don't want to miss it. I recommend this film to anyone who is looking for a great time and hey if you don't like the movie you can look at johnny depp or orlando bloom

    To be continued...
A waste of money. Got dragged along to it by my girlfriend, who even admitted it was pretty ordinary. No finale, just a cynical "to be continued" exercise in franchising. Even with such little expectation I was surprised how much disregard Hollywood pays to the audience. Go support an Australian film (say 10 canoes or Jindabyne) instead.Even if it's bad you won't have wasted it on this American crap!

I'm really upset that a number of people with no sense of humour seem to have gone to the cinema, watched this brilliant movie and then given it a bad review because they are just a little too thick/strait laced to get it! Some of the most brilliant action scenes I've ever seen (the waterwheel is awesome!) and some really clever character interaction. People - if you don't have a sense of humour then don't bother going to see this one - if you're prepared to suspend your disbelief and have a cracking good laugh then go along. I'm off to see it for the third time tonight and can't wait for it to come out on DVD!

I had never seen the first "Pirates" movie, but when I accompanied a friend of mine and her daughter to the film my first thoughts were "Ho hum, here we go". But I absolutely love it. So much so I went and rented the first pirates movie the very next night so I could get "up to speed" I cant wait for the third intallment. Johhny Depp clearly loves playing this character we know as Jack Sparrow and that shows.

    Lifeless
This movie just didn't have the same life to it as the first film. There was no tension, it just seemed to jump randomly from scene to scene with no sense of direction, much like Jack's magic compass.

The encrusted crustacean baddies were well done and yes it was funny when Jack was turned into a shish kebab but other than that I was not finding much to laugh at or wow at or puzzle at. The movie just didn't draw me in on any emotional level except that I wanted to find out what was going to happen - and I didn't even get that in the end.

It looks like they've set it up for a good finale though. The hunt for Jack Sparrow will be a good plot and they've set up lots of other things to be resolved as well.

So what if the silliness is bumped up a notch or two? Who cares if parts of the plot were hard to follow? If Disney are looking to squeeze a few extra bucks out of this "Pirates" phenomenon by leaving us looking forward to a third movie? "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is equal to a whole lot of swashbuckling, yo ho ho and a bottle o' rum FUN! And it doesn't pretend to be anything else.

The second movie sees the main characters of Jack, Elizabeth and Will grow and become more independent, with superior acting and much more grunt than in "...The Black Pearl". The special effects are used to their full potential in endless unbelievably cool scenes involving even grosser creatures and more original fight scenes than in the first movie! Clever, unassuming and wholly entertaining!

Who cares about the plot, the story, the action? Ladies you would be crazy to miss it. A chance to see Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom side by side again, you've got to see it. The movie was fantastic, the storyline inventive and the casting sensational. Johnny Depp yet again plays a great role, while could Orlando Bloom ever look bad?! Can't wait for the next one.

    A little overboard, but enjoyable
    3 star rating
This movie, simply put, is a sequel to set up the trilogy. It picks up where the first movie left off and leaves us with a cliffhanger, one that with all the hype surrounding the movie is not suspenseful.

However, it is entertaining and very clever. I thought they went a little overboard with Jack's babbling but overall an enjoyable film.

There's no plot, no script to speak of, and a film that is over-long, muddling and fumbling its way across a sea of tedium. This is a dreadful, artless piece of nonsense to be avoided at all costs.

I don't get to go to the cinema a lot, so I was quite excited to see this movie as I have the DVD of the first one at home. It was brilliant and funny with lots of twists and turns, and what I hate more then someone's mobile going off in the cinema is someone giving a movie a bad review! Look, if you don't like the movie then don't put in a review! It just discredits what some may think was quite good.

Besides that I think it was a well planned movie with plenty of action. It sticks to the storyline but uses the previous movie's act to create the funny side.

So good on you and I can't wait until the third!

I loved the first film and was greatly entertained by the humour. I went into the sequel expecting about the same level of entertainment and came out with a smile from ear to ear. It was just as good as "The Curse of the Black Pearl" and was even more!

The plotline was slightly hard to follow at times, but watching it a second time definitely helped.

Jack Sparrow becoming a human kebab and his newfound comfort in a jar of dirt are hilarious - it had me in stitches!

"Pirates" is the new "Star Wars"
    4 star rating
Yep, you heard it here first. This sequel takes it to the level of an epic and it does so very convincingly. Whilst some have pointed out, it is not as humorous as the first (perhaps they changed comedy consultants or something), the action and storytelling is great - if not a little too fast. The thing I enjoyed the most about this movie is how it has captured the essence that made "Star Wars" so popular (before the utterly shameful and cynical prequels/marketing machines), namely: villains, monsters, princesses, rebel heroes, travel, mystic advisors and a good old-fashioned love story.

Forget about the Hollywood movie machine for a minute, forget about the fact that going to the movies these days is tantamount to sitting at home watching TV and by this I mean the sheer quantity (lots) and quality (low) of advertising before the main features (personal dig), and go watch this movie.

Seen it twice, will see it again!
    4 star rating
While not as good as "Curse of the Black Pearl", "Dead Man's Chest" is definitely worth seeing (we've seen it twice and plan to go at least once more). The movie was interesting, exciting and well-acted.

Even at 2 1/2 hours, it didn't seem as if there was enough time to devote to all the facets of a great story. I'm in the minority and would have sat through a three-hour flick! Johnny Depp is fabulous but underused and Orlando is just....beautiful (and he can act). While some characters aren't as interesting as others, it still makes for a nice ensemble.

Whatever the reason of the powers-that-be for creating the trilogy, take time out to just sit back and enjoy. Is it the best movie ever made? No, but I would recommend it. One negative about it all: we have to wait until next year for POTC 3.

    Too many yawns
I approached this movie with a sense of anticipation. I was not expecting well drawn characters, thought provoking story or plot, but I was expecting a Hollywood blockbuster with enough action and spice to hold my attention and give me a few laughs and even gasps. I was wrong.

I found myself yawning and checking my watch quite frequently. There were enough characters with vested interests to generate several movies, but it all failed to come together. I suggest that the director and producers look at some of the cheap Hollywood rubbish that made up the matinees of the 1950s and '60s because they have forgotten how to tell stories and make movies. Just too much reliance on special effects here. By the way, what happened to the compass in the end? And what about the East India scoundrel? And Davy Jones? Did I leave too soon? Was all this explained during the credits or just left out?

A good way to pass a couple of hours
    3.5 star rating
I have similar comments to Superman - great action and effects, but the plot gets a bit lost. Johnny Depp plays the part to perfection. Keira Knightley is up to her usual brilliance - just a bit too unrealistic for her to play a man on a ship and not be recognised. Lined up beside men with missing teeth, filthy skin, eyes missing, and infinitely ugly, she sort of stands out. Men don't look that good. The movie had just the right amount of humour. At times I couldn't remember who was on what ship. Parts of the plot get left out, so you have to mentally fill in the gaps while jumping out of your seat as a giant squid devours a ship.

The action is fast, it keeps you entertained. It won't challenge your brain power unless you want to try to follow the plot. However, I was well entertained for a couple of hours. I watched it from the comfort of lay back seats - great for me to watch in comfort, while my wife was comfortable sleeping through the second half. Perhaps it's not for everyone.

So much potential, so little follow-through
Being a fan of the first movie, I went in eager to have a great evening of swashbuckling fun. I was disappointed. I kept waiting for humour, excitement, intrigue... anything! It wasn't until the high-stakes dice game between Davy Jones and Will Turner that I actually started to feel a twinge of interest. I didn't mind Keira Knightley in the first movie, but actually found her unbearable in this one. Orlando Bloom did better. Johnny Depp was great considering the material he had to work with.

    Darker edge but still enjoyable
    4.5 star rating
Forget the worthless and pathetic "X-Men 3". Forget the politically intriguing "V for Vendetta". Forget even "Superman Returns". Captain Jack is back! This new sequel lives up to expectations in terms of wit, humour, story and acting. There were a lot of funny scenes and one-liners, and Jack Sparrow was as likeable as ever. Bill Nighy was impressive as the dark Davey Jones, and Bloom and Knightley were also good to watch in some parts. The sword battles were great, including the one between Sparrow, Will and Norrington. And the ending has a certain twist to it.

The theme is very dark, so this isn't a movie for younger kids. There were some gory bits (including at the start, where a man's eye is poked out by a crow) and a lot of supernatural parts. It was a lot darker than the first movie.

However, that aside, "Dead Man's Chest" is very enjoyable and witty, and will have you laughing at Jack Sparrow's antics.

After enjoying the first movie above and beyond my expectations, I was very disappointed in the sequel. I found it difficult to actually sit through, expecting it to get better but to no avail.

    Captain Jack is back!
    4 star rating
Being abrupt and getting to the point - this movie was great. Special effects were dazzling, soundtrack amazing, humour was up-to-scratch. I guess you could say this movie makes a pretty good argument when it comes to the whole "sequels are never better than the original" statement.

But what goes up must come down. It was a fairly lengthy film, it only just satisfied my patience, even when I knew they had a lot to explain and get through. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable. Even the ending, which made it pretty bold that the sequel (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) is coming to put us through another two hours of giant sea creatures destroying pirate ships, hid the fact that a trilogy is pushing it.

Once the money rolls in, the love for art of the film dies, as Margaret Pomeranz once said. Even if the franchise is just looking to roll in a few bucks, it's still a captivating cinema experience that can't be missed.

    What happened to Jack Sparrow?
    3 star rating
I am such a fan of Johnny Depp and in the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" he was quite endearing as the lovable rascal Captain Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately he came off this time as some sort of strange effeminate character running around with his arms floudering all over the place, which was quite off-putting! He seemed to have lost any slither of honour that he may have had before in the last movie. I didn't feel that he really did have "a good heart", as Keira said to him at the end of the show.

A positive though: the action was full-on and kept my interest all the way though even though it was a fairly long session. The special effects were also really well done.

All in all a great way for teens and adults to pass a couple of entertaining hours.

Great movie for young and old
    4 star rating
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is a great movie for everyone 10 years of age and above. Retaining the swashbuckling action of the first movie while bringing a quirkier and darker humour to the sequel combines to make it one of the few worthwhile Hollywood blockbusters of late.

"Dead Man's Chest" does not stand alone with a completely different story to the first one as some sequels do, so you should see the first movie in the series before watching this.

A rollicking adventure with humour for just about any age group and great action scenes making it an enjoyable, light-hearted action adventure. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies are revitalising a tired genre and this is another prime example after the smash hit 2003 adventure "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl".

    An hour too long
    2.5 star rating
Once again Mark Beirne gets it wrong.

This movie is somewhat like "King Kong" for the fact that it's about an hour too long, simple fun action scenes drag on for what feels like an eternity, and you're left there staring around the cinema until it's over.

Being a fan of the first movie I was very excited about the release of "Dead Man's Chest", the first of the two sequels. The online teasers and full trailers delivered on the hype, but failed to convey one important thing: the movie is boring.

Johnny Depp is great as Jack Sparrow once again, but he's let down by the supporting cast in Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, who when combined, make for some of the most boring scenes in cinema history.

The special effects are great, and Davy Jones and his crew are worth the ticket price alone, but with an overly long story this movie fails to deliver.

I was really let down by this movie. There were heaps of well-filmed action scenes in stunning locations, but they lacked the fun of the last movie.

Everyone in the cinema walked out muttering, I was not the only one disappointed. I don't expect any real plot in an action movie, just something to glue the scenes together is fine, but it lacked even that. It seemed the only reason they filmed it in the first place was to try and earn some money to pay for the next one. It was a really long ad.

Still watch it - it is entertaining - but go on cheap night. I hope the next instalment is significantly better.

Finally a sequel that gives you more. This time around we get a very clear direction to follow and a fantastic looking film to hang onto until the third adventure comes around. Depp is brilliant again in what most people say is the role he was born to play. The effects captured in "Dead Man's Chest" definitely give it the platform needed to make this episode as good if not better than "Black Pearl". Great story and the perfect twist at the end.

Great plot, great humour, great movie
The movie holds your attention for the whole three hours, there is never a dull moment, especially when you have great actors like Johnny Depp starring as the humours and slightly absurd character Captain Jack Sparrow.

"Dead Man's Chest" was great if not better than the first movie and definitely holds the same spark that gave the first movie its name.

The end was unresolved but is expected because there is a third movie on its way.

    3.5 star rating
Although this movie does not have the same humour as the first, and is slighter darker, it's still a great romp. The part of Jack Sparrow seems tailor-made for Johnny Depp and he really appears to enjoy every minute of it, as does the rest of the crew.

Great costume work, scenery and special effects. If you're looking for some good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure, this has it all. If you've never heard of such a thing, then go and find out... you're in for a treat.

I do not recommend it for younger children, but then again there were many youngsters in the cinema. Parents don't seem to worry these days.
