    What we say
Yes, it's even better than The Dark Knight

    Mark Beirne, MovieFix
    5 star rating
Christopher Nolan believes in his audience. He expects you to trust him when he throws you into the deep end, follow him through his elaborate maze and have faith that he will deliver on expectations at the end of the journey.

Here is a filmmaker who has built seemingly unreachable expectations. He won praise for the time-in-reverse thriller Memento, sustained dramatic tension in Insomnia and The Prestige, and did the impossible with the Batman franchise: turned it into a masterful work of art.

Now comes Inception, a project that Nolan conceived 10 years ago — and it was worth the wait. The film is Nolan's masterpiece, a true original in every sense of the word.

To describe the plot would be unfair (it's best to see it with no knowledge of what's to come) and very difficult. Let's just say it's set in a world where people can enter other people's dreams and extract information. You can never be sure what's dream and what's reality in Inception — it's part of Nolan's elaborate guessing game. Sometimes the characters don't even know if they're in the conscious or subconscious state.

Nolan's use of special effects is astounding — the sort of game-changing cinematic trickery that made The Matrix a phenomenon in 1999. At one point, dream 'architect' Ariadne (Ellen Page) creates a cityscape purely by thought, and we see it come to life in front of us: bridges rise, streets fold in on each other, cars travel both vertically and horizontally. In another scene, dreamer Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) fights an assassin in a zero-gravity environment, the walls rotating as objects float through the air.

But not once is Nolan showing off — every stunning visual has a reason for being. The story goes deeper and deeper inside people's dreams, so dreams within dreams become dreams within dreams within dreams.

Like The Dark Knight, Inception features a massive ensemble cast where everyone brings their A-game. Few actors are as consistent as Leonardo DiCaprio, while Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe and Cillian Murphy offer solid support.

When Inception cuts to black after its haunting final image, you will want to discuss it for days, pull apart its narrative strands and debate its theories. Then you'll want to see it again. That's the mark of a great movie.

    What you say
    Interesting concept
Dreams, their interpretation, collective unconscious where we all play a part without others and us knowing, pasychic powers of reading other's mind -that are possibilities of humand mind and the Higher Self.. However, this movie was neitgher scientific, nor psychic, but came out a science fiction that was hard to follow, and far too long.

    Inception==>Deception==>Total American Garbage
No wonder the world is losing the plot and the generation of kids coming through are clueless with this BS technology! Am from Sydney so i agree with the many comments coming from QLD! Typical garbage coming out of Hollywood. The money raised out of this movie by deceiving people should be honoured back to mental health charities.

Sitting in a movie trying to make sense of absolute nothing is beyond my belief. I would recommend people watch go to the Spanish, Italian or French Film festival to see some great movies there that have meaning!!

The only dreams i wanna get is the Powerball numbers! At least this way i could leave this senseless society and live on a tropical island where simplicity is the key of life!

De Caprio with this film and Shutter Island is going backwards! He is way better actor than to create plots that are total BS!

Im also curious why Hoyts and Greater Union don't reduce their prices to $5 ticket to fill out the cinema rooms. There were 8 soles watching something tonight??? You don't have to be a genius to know that they must be losing so much money running movies in empty cinemas!

    Stick to Independent!

I loved this movie! Not as complicated or hard to follow as some people have said, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole thing fit together really well, and I liked that the actors weren't all big names, but were very watchable. In particular I loved Ellen Page and Tom Hardy. I would definitely consider seeing it again.

This movie is definitely a must see for people who enjoy conspiracy and films which keep you thinking.

If you can't follow the plot you may not understand it fully and will probably complain about it. Which a lot of reviews submitted have done.

I am surpirsed at anyone who would give this movie less than 5 stars. Anyone who does obviously just does not understand the ideas and concepts being presented. I have not seen a movie like this in a long time and I was completely impressed with original ideas and the actor's performances. Definitely worth 5 stars!!!!

I loved this movie. i've gone back to see it many times. My fav. To date. The more you watch the more you understand. To like the movie you need to understand the movie. The people that don't like the movie sound like the kind that only like B grade action. My thoughts, if you don't like the movie, there is something wrong with you and you proberly think that the Blair witch project is real. You should be banned from cinemas throughout Australia. =) Sequel? Proceed with extream care! Cause it could really ruin the picture. Branch off to a completly new story line, new characters and maybe it could work.

For those that have been genetically endowed with a single non-functioning neuron, this story will be difficult to follow. For the rest of us, this movie is ingenious: from the intricately-interwoven storyline, the amazing acting, explosive action scenes to the award-winning filming across multiple different countries, this is a definite must-see. Half of us will go back to see it a second time to marvel at the ingenuity of this creation.

Sufficient to say that I almost walked out 1/2 way through the film. Trying to follow this "dream within a dream within a dream" theme was not the least bit enjoyable. The latter part of the film depicting skiers blowing up a building in what appeared to be a snow resort was ludicrous. It's too easy to say the film is a voyage into ones deeper thoughts...it is in fact a confusing hotch potch of unrelated "wham bang", high tech sequences drawn out for the 2 and a half hours this film occupies.

the best movie I've seen in years ... clever, different, brilliant and believable acting, outstanding screenplay .. you name it, it was spot on. I see many, many Oscars in it's layered dreaming!

A movie that actually makes you think for your entertainment, plus gives hours of discussion into the night ... can't wait to see it again as I'm sure they'll be little bits I missed the first time around.

well, i certainly have been scratching my head, reading some of the other people's comments, who thought this was actually a good movie!

    - .... NO SO! >>> worse than terrible ...

sorry, but there is no other way to put it that that!

extremely shallow plot (& acting), relying heavily on special effects, which, by the way, were ordinary at best, and providing no entertainment whatsoever!

considering the length of the movie, i was expecting an epic in the style of matrix, but instead was presented with a washed out idea, vague at best, and boring for the most part!

the movie had me looking forward to the ending, so that i could leave with my date, only to find out after that she thought the best part of that movie for her was the fact that she could look forward to never having to see it again!

    A modern masterpiece.

The only thing more difficult than deciding which is better, the screenplay or the directing, is coming to grips with the fact they were both done by the same man. Christopher Nolan, take a bow. With a script that is reported to have been started ten years ago, Nolan has crafted intricate layer upon intricate layer with precision and cunning rarely seen before. The unique concept is (excuse the pun) mind-blowing in itself, but the way Nolan navigates through this universe is the truly genius part; aside from the one obvious ‘movie miracle’, Inception is grounded in enough reality that suspending belief has never been easier. In addition, and thanks to the freedom he was given by the studio after the uber-successful Dark Knight, Nolan has not jeopardised his vision by attempting to accommodate to the lowest common denominator in the movie-going public, this is an intellectually intense film that requires, and provokes, thought. I’ve always said that Reginald Rose’s screenplay for 12 Angry Men is the greatest of all time, but this comes bloody close.

Behind the camera Nolan shows once again an unparalleled skill in the employment of sleight-of-hand visual techniques that were previously most apparent in his marvellous magicians tale, The Prestige. The meticulous care taken with details both big and small is felt in its entirety, there is absolutely no deadwood within his frame. If you can see it, then it is meant to be seen. Nolan shows you everything you need in order to unravel the story on your own, but is clever enough to manage it so you won’t realise this until the movie has already finished. This is what makes him the phenomenal filmmaker he is today, the uncanny knack of ensuring his pictures are watchable over and over again.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this isn’t a ‘blockbuster’ though. The action scenes are second to none, as are the effects, both computer and practical. There is one particular physics-defying fight in a hotel that will have your jaw on the floor, akin to when Neo dodges bullets for the first time in The Matrix (Nolan has admitted the Wachowski Brothers’ sci-fi flick was a heavy influence) or when Jake is flying his Mountain Banshee in Avatar. The CGI is utilised to magnificent effect, the sight of a Paris street curling up on top of itself or the more subtle zero-gravity sequence are just two of many awe-inspiring moments thanks to the flawless computer graphics. There must be something said regarding Nolan’s choice to not go down the 3D route too. He proves that you don’t have to use the extra dimension to generate a visually stunning movie-going experience and that the future of cinema isn’t exclusively synonymous with the third dimension, 2D will always have a place.

Leonardo DiCaprio solidifies his position as one of the finest actors of our time with his portrayal of guilt-ridden dream thief, Dom Cobb. There’s no clear cut line as to whether he is good or bad, only he has made mistakes and will continue to do so, as all humans do. The most important, and interesting, thing is how a person deals with their mistakes and DiCaprio knows this, subsequently providing Cobb with emotional depth in his ambiguous actions / decisions and keeping us intrigued along the way. Fantastically there’s no weak link in his supporting cast either: Page proves she can excel despite being out of her ‘quirky’ comfort zone, Gordon-Levitt is sharp as Cobb’s tightly-wound right hand man, Brit up-and-comer Hardy is electric as the flashier member of the team, Cotillard is engrossing as Cobb’s dangerous subconscious and Murphy brilliantly plays against type as the vulnerable target who elicits sympathy.

Nolan has, without a shadow of doubt in my mind nor any hesitation that this may be a giddy knee-jerk reaction, created a modern masterpiece. Cinematic history informs me that a key factor in becoming a ‘classic’ is whether or not it can stand the test of time, well Inception has forgone that piece of criteria and has immediately adopted its rightful position in the highest echelon of motion pictures.

A dream within a dream within a dream...hmmm. Sounds vaguely like 1001 Nights to me. An idea conceived almost as many thousand years ago.

Let me start of by clarifying that this is not a bad movie. It has all the right actors. All the right effects etc etc. It does well. I question the NEED to make a film such as this, however. The cinema was packed. The young people were oohing and aaahing at every twisted turn. If you can follow this story you start to feel very clever don't you? What a smart movie! And it truly does stand for everything our generation has to be proud of too. Leonardo Di Caprio, Juno, the Matrix... you name it.

Is it a good story? If I return to the Arabian Nights i think I would prefer a story more grounded in humanity. It is the "simple" motions that we go through in life in which the REAL complexities are to be found. Watch this film if you want to keep dreaming; believing that you have witnessed something that only a lateral thinker can decipher. That only the modern generation can claim as their own. Nolan has certainly succeeded in implanting this belief/idea in some. Keep pretending, if you want. The real world will be waiting when you are ready. P.S I think this is a must see film if only to reflect on who we really have become.

    Outstanding achievement
    5 star rating
This movie cannot be overhyped, it can not be raved about too much or given too many stars. Inception cannot be explained effectively, no trailer or review can really give you an idea of what you're in for with this movie. Inception is an achievement, it has a truly touching love story, a thrilling espionage story, impressive special effects and entertaining shoot-em-up scenes, but never strays too far from the story. This is fortunate, because the story is so complicated and multi-layered with numerous characters each with their own significant part to play. Watching Inception is similar to what I imagine wrestling a crocodile would be like, it's very fast moving, it knows what it wants to deliver and how to do it, it has many elements and if you let go for just a moment, you'll be eaten alive. This is not a film to watch casually, you must take everything in and not miss a thing. If you're in a cinema and get up to go to the toilet, don't bother coming back as you've likely missed something vital and the film will be spoilt. See this movie, it will challenge you more than most films possibly could, but your undivided attention will be rewarded with an entertaining and impressive film.
