When his new father-in-law, King Harold falls ill, Shrek is looked at as the heir to the land of Far, Far Away. Not one to give up his beloved swamp, Shrek recruits his friends Donkey and Puss in Boots to install the rebellious Artie as the new king. Princess Fiona, however, rallies a band of royal girlfriends to fend off a coup d'etat by the jilted Prince Charming.

    What we say
    Green ogre grows mould

    Mark Beirne, MovieFix
    2.5 star rating
The weakest of the trilogy, "Shrek the Third" lacks the wit and zest of its predecessors. Audiences who are expecting an abundance of pop culture references and movie in-jokes will be disappointed, as this sequel focuses on a derivative plot that feels more suited to a direct-to-DVD movie.

"Shrek the Third" finds the big green ogre in a predicament of leadership: Fiona's (voiced by Cameron Diaz) ailing father offers him the crown, leaving Shrek (Mike Myers) in a state of panic. Meanwhile, Fiona announces that she is pregnant - but is Shrek ready to take on the responsibilities of fatherhood?

The new film introduces a pivotal new character, Fiona's long-lost cousin Artie (Justin Timberlake), who Shrek sees as a more suitable heir to the throne. Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) is back, this time planning to take the kingdom of Far Far Away under siege.

"Shrek the Third" is targeted at a much younger audience than "Shrek 2". Speeches about responsibility and individuality are excessively sentimental and ham-fisted, something that the previous films avoided.

There are certainly some funny moments - John Cleese is hilarious in an early scene as the dying frog king, and Gingerbread Man (Conrad Vernon) is adorable as ever - but the laughs are infrequent. The use of a contemporary soundtrack doesn't work as well as it did last time around, while the film regurgitates some of the cultural jokes of the previous movie.

"Shrek the Third" is destined to see green at the box office, but the franchise is starting to grow mould.

Genuine humour is Far, Far Away

It's the year of the big three with so many films reaching their third instalment, and stateside it's turning into the summer of the sequel. "Shrek the Third" has been one of the more anticipated films of the season as we await the return of the jolly green giant.

This time we find the kingdom of Far, Far Away in uproar once again with the death of the king and the search for a new monarch in the form of the once and future King Arthur since Shrek has shirked his ties to the throne in favour of savouring the swamp with ogress Fiona. Prince Charming has less than charming plans afoot, rallying the villains of the fairytale world to revolution (in a storyline suspiciously similar to "Happy N'ever After" which was in itself suspiciously similar to "Shrek"). Despite the many impostors that have come in its wake, "Shrek", like the character itself, stood head and shoulders above the rest. Somehow "Shrek the Third" feels like one of those fakes, not the real deal, like a faint facsimile of previous efforts. There seems too much smug polish, throwaway gags and disposable plot. As the plot takes Shrek further away from Far, Far Away, "Shrek the Third" seems to be running on empty with humour that seems half-baked and ideas that feel like leftovers from the previous films.

One way in which this instalment is superior to its predecessors is that it is it draws more expression from its characters than ever before. Shrek becomes even more sympathetic and the character goes on an interesting journey reconciling the two sides of his character: his natural ogreness and his inherent compassion as he faces the prospect of becoming a father. The character suddenly seems three-dimensional even if the art form isn't. The voice actors themselves were always an animated bunch to begin and Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas are brilliant once more but this time Eric Idle is the standout as Mr Merlin.

"Shrek the Third" shows a franchise starting to falter. This third instalment might have produced a fairytale finish, the happy ending the genre is so insistent upon. But this is not that happy, nor anything like an ending, as there are reputedly two more films to come.

I went to this movie with my 10-yr-old and was expecting to be a bored by it all (it takes a bit to make me laugh) but I thought the movie was fantastic, better than the two previous ones by far, the introduction of new characters and the personalities they portray had me laughing out loud, I loved it and for a real family movie I give it top marks, I can't wait to get it on dvd so I can watch it again!

    Shrek Babies Rock!
I enjoyed "Shrek". I didn't go to see it at the cinemas, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

I saw this one with my whole family, and it brought out laughs and smiley moments.

My favourite part was seeing Artie (voiced by Justin Timberlake) on screen for the first time, and who couldn't adore the Shrek Babies? SO CUTE!

"Shrek the Third" was a pretty good movie, the let down being that it was a bit too short. But I suppose they have to also think about little kids who can't sit down for hours. Hopefully there will be a fourth to improve the third and bring in a strong ending.

    Shrek is Dreck
In case you have not mastered your Jewish humour a la Seinfeld, Dreck means just like it sounds: lousy or a stinker.

The original idea was funny, wacky, irreverent and a take on all those syrupy Disney movies that we were forced to go to when we were kids. This is our revenge. Or rather, this was our revenge.

Here was a character that thumbed its nose at all those fairy tales and got away with it big time. But now, the jokes are getting stale; the characters a little frail and the plot is thinning. Almost threadbare. All that remains is the original idea. Which was good. But a joke is really funny the first time you hear it. But the third and fourth time you start to cringe.

And cringe I did. I don't really know of any sequels that actually work. They sometimes make money, but more often they kill the joy of the first experience. I know you are going to mention Godfather II and III. But I would have to say that those were not sequels in the true sense. But more like parts II & III of the Coreleone family saga. So they worked, because in II they filled in the before and after of I and in III they completed the saga.

Of course, with HollyWeed you never know and they may suddenly resurrect the franchise with Godfather IV. After all Francis Coppola has to eat.

I hope that they don't. And I sincerely hope that they don't come back with Dreck IV. But the reality of the movie making industry is that if the numbers add up you are going to the next numeral in the sequence. They only stop when the numbers don't add up. The bean counters care nothing for the art.

Who knows maybe some indie producer will come up with a new ogre in which he takes off Dreck, how that the green ogre has become flat and mainstream.

    Wouldn't that be funny?

Three generations of our family went to see this (despite some shabby reviews) and we all had a ball. I have not laughed out loud at some parts of movies like this for years! We all think we might have to see it again as we probably missed some of the dialogue while chuckling away. Good for all ages - ignore the miserable critics!

"Shrek the Third" was good, better than "Shrek 2" I think. Everyone says the other two are better than the original but it's just because it was so long ago that it's getting old. Originals are definitely best. Worth seeing though definitely.

I totally loved "Shrek The Third"! It was funny and very enjoyable. The introduction of new characters was a smart decision, as it gave viewers fresh blood to become familiarised with. The gorgeous Shrek babies were a delight to feast my eyes upon - very cute kiddies! Overall, I would recommend this to any Shrek fan who found themselves fall in love with the previous two productions.

This movie was better than I expected. I really do hate that ogre (now that I have seen the first movie for the hundredth time) but I did not hate this movie. It had many levels of comedy, from the slapstick, immature comedy for the children to the wink-wink, nudge-nudge humour for the adults. If I had to compare it to the other two movies (the first time I watched them that is) I would rate this as the worst of the three, but the other two movies are of a very high standard which is very hard to better let alone equal. To all families with young children I do urge you to see this movie but to everyone else make up your own mind. You will not be amazed but you will not be bored either.

"Shrek the Third" is good because of the characters that have been in the first two movies, but it isn't great. The humour has REALLY gone downhill and the new characters haven't given more depth. So please, if there's going to be more, quit while you're ahead.

Best movie I have ever seen! "Shrek the Third" is way better than "Shrek" and "Shrek 2"!

As I am a parent of four children, I saw "Shrek the Third". Although it is a children's movie, the producers still make it enjoyable for the parents!

All of my friends asked to take my children because they desperately wanted to see it. My kids ended up seeing the movie FIVE TIMES!! They never got sick of the movie, not even my 17 and 14 year olds!

    Do opinions really count?
Hey all, don't let feedback by others put you off on seeing the movie i thought it was great, why not go watch it yourself and have the experince on how you think it was created, because everyone has a different opinion. Some think it was the worst out. Others think it was okay but could of been better, and some others just think it was better then the other two, so its really up to you what you think because you could interpert the movie completely different to anyone else.. Coming from me if your a person that likes feedback from others to make the decision for you then my younger sisters are big shreck fans and they absolutely loved it, i think shreck is a great movie for young kids to enjoy with family and friends. Thumbs up and good work once again to the producers. I will certainly be looking forward to "Shrek 4" if that is decided to be brought out. Thanks :)

Was expecting a lot more from Dreamworks for part three, but it really didn't live up to the hype. There were only a couple of good scenes, like the exchange of voices between the donkey and the cat but the rest was not that great. Hopefully they won't attempt part four.

Ok, one-and-a-half stars is a bit harsh, but this is "Shrek"! I got the same feeling watching "Spider-Man 3", where the film is just a cash-in on the earlier ones, a big budget, but no fresh ideas. Films like these give other recent (and good) sequels like "X-Men 3" and "Rocky Balboa" a bad name. Wait for DVD if you can.

    Good continuation for the franchise
In saying that I'm referring to the fact that they have continued the story as well as they possibly could, so that they can continue to make these films.

I was informed yesterday that the husband of a friend of my fiance will be travelling to LA to start pre-production on "Shrek 4". So there will definitely be another. And while they continue to add new characters, new jokes and story lines that are witty and humorous they will continue to bring the crowds into the cinema.

My only problems with this film were three-fold.

Firstly, Arthur (Justin Timberlake) - this can be deemed as a masterstroke but in my opinion was unbelievably annoying. Justin Timberlake as Arthur is a marketing winner, as you can see the character developing further as the series progresses. But his presence on screen is boring. And not at all believable (and that was only his voice, thank god it wasn’t live action). His style added nothing to the franchise and I believe detracted from the film. But Kudos to the casting director for placing him in the film. As they will have pulled in another demographic of movie goers, who are fans of his music, but not necessarily of the films.

Secondly, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) – What an absolute waste of comedic talent. Eddie Murphy we all know of. The older generation still appreciate his classic 80’s turns in films such as Trading Places, Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop etc and the younger generation in movies like Daddy Day Care, Dr Dolittle and The Nutty Professor etc. But all generations love his portrayal of Donkey and his constant quips and wise cracks, and emotional tug-o-war as the ever faithful companion to our hero Shrek. But I felt that Donkey was severely wasted and the character only turned up for about 1 minute of valuable time on screen in the initial Puss in Boots body switch scene with Merlin. It’s a shame I must say, as Donkey was the glue behind the first movie and with Puss in the second, which kept everyone entertained while the real story of Shrek and Fiona unfolded in both films.

Thirdly, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) – My word, if the waste of Donkey was a shame this was a travesty. Puss in Boots stole the show in "Shrek 2" and was so popular that the producers have now sanctioned his own spin off movie (Donkey has only ever had a one episode appearance on the now defunct CGI animal TV Comedy series “Father of the Pride” to his credit). Yet in "Shrek the Third" he is deplorably underused. So much so that my 5-year-old nephew asked me where he was. Puss didn’t have much screen time in "Shrek 2" but he was a valuable part of the ensemble and played off Eddie Murphy’s Donkey superbly. In "Shrek the Third" it seems that Puss in Boots (along with Donkey) have almost become surplus to requirements to accommodate the character Arthur.

I hope that with "Shrek 4" the producers revisit what made the first two "Shrek"s so enjoyable for all ages and get back to what we all want. More comedy from Puss and Donkey, more interplay between the main characters with lots of bickering and making up, and showing the bonds of friendship, love and social tolerance being the most important thing of all.

I think "Shrek the Third" was a huge let down. After the previous two movies which were really good this had nothing to it.

The story was too short and nothing much happened. It's like there was this great movie but then the directors had to shorten it. The good parts are there but the other parts to fill in and that are just important are not there.

When it was at the end I seriously thought something more was going to happen.

But, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Justing Timberlake did a great job. I especially liked the bit at the high school; that was hilarious!

All in all, "Shrek the Third" was an average movie.

Failing to live up to the first two movies, the highlight of the movie is Pinochio trying to sidestep telling the truth or an outright lie (you would have seen most of that scene on the trailers).

Beyond that, the movie makes use of some tired old jokes that the kids will more than likely love, but the older fans may find themselves comparing to other movies (Not something you want to find yourself doing) and focuses on the use of the old high school setting as inspiration in the later half of the movie. Charming is still up to his old tricks, but the villains are now simply miss-understood and act as others see them (It's not my fault, I was never given a chance)

What should have been a great movie (hust look at what has gone before and the cast that holds it all together) is simply fun.

Lets hope that the franchise finds it's feet in the next film, otherwise it could be a real stinker if the slide in enjoyment is anything to go by.

Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but less so than the first couple.

The original "Shrek" was a blockbuster and they did everything right in it too and in "Shrek 2" they took what didn't work in 1 and what did and made an even better movie. Unfortunaltly they failed to do this in "Shrek the Third", failing to nail that 30-sec humour that happened many times in the previous movies. I am disappointed and I hope you don't expect this to be the funniest of the series because it ain't.

"Shrek the Third" wasn't as I expected but only because of the how much I enjoyed the previous two movies. The first was extremely funny the second was more magical and the third although enjoyable it just didn't have the spark that the others did.

From the advertising I thought the babies would be the focus of the movie, however they only came at the very end.

I would always see a "Shrek" movie at the cinema rather than wait for the DVD because whether its as good as the last or not the animation is great and they really are unique.

    Dull, disappointing
    1 star rating
Has anyone asked themselves why this movie did not receive a worldwide release date?

It may have something to do with the fact that this movie is an extremely poor attempt to create the magic of the first two flims.

I am someone who loved "Shrek" and thought highly of "Shrek 2" but after seeing this third installation I was left with nothing but disappoinment.

A good sign of a good comedy movie is it's quotability factor. If friends can get together and quote a movie and the jokes then it left a mark on people and has some saying power.

"Shrek the Third" will give you nothing to talk about with your friends and will just leave all of you disappointed.

This movie has been talked up by Cameron Diaz during her Australian visit yet you can see it in her looks and hear it in her voice that she thinks this movie isn't worth the time and money wasted on it.

Then again she gets her money whether it's good or not.

Yes it will make money at the box office and may even set records but that is only throuh expectation not quality!

Shrek the Third is a very funny movie, full of adventure.

I has a great cast to back up the voices of the funny and full-of-life characters. Mike Myers is always displaying a funny role in what ever movie he does, Cameron Diaz is just so hot I don't know why Justin Timberlake left her, Eddie Murphy did a really good and funny job as always.

I still think that the first is the best but if there is more bring them on cause they are just good family movies to watch and I just love them.

Well done Chris Miller and Raman Hui for bringing another good movie together.
